What Savings Crisis?

  • By Bill Conerly
  • In Economy

I’ve been skeptical (like this post) for some time about the claims that we have a national savings crisis.  Now the New York Times, which I think is a newspaper on the east coast, has an article about economists who are also skeptical.  They cite research that most folks approaching retirement age are OK.  The Times features Joel Kotlikoff, a very smart guy whom I’d trust with my retirement calculations. (Hat to Marginal Revolution.)  In fact, he’s developed an on-line retirement calculator, though I cannot vouch for it at this time.

Even though I don’t think we have a national savings crisis, it’s still possible that you have a personal savings crisis.  Don’t complain to me if you’re eating dog food 20 years from now.

  • The Back Rent Problem Won’t Hurt The Economy January 19, 2021
Being behind on rent is a big problem for tenants and for landlords, but it’s not a big problem for the economy as a whole, despite the scary numbers.

Testimonials

As you know, it can be difficult to find economists who provide good substantive information who are so entertaining and engaging. I received many enthusiastic comments from members and others in attendance. I was very pleased with Dr. Conerly and have recommended him to NCSTAE, our national organization.
Molly Steckel, Idaho Telecom Alliance
You made a complicated global picture understandable. I have received many favorable comments from those in attendance. I frequently heard comments like ‘Now I understand’ or ‘Wow, now I get it’ and ‘He was great to listen to. Thanks for bringing Bill to our meeting.’
Pete Van Sickle, Idaho Department of Lands
Bill was a great resource in helping us develop our business model and has continued to be a great advisor as we have refined it and successfully entered the marketplace.
John Courtney, CEO, NextJob, Inc.
Every time you spoke, we got business.
Chris Rasmussen, Washington Trust Bank, Bank of the Northwest
We asked Bill Conerly to look at one of the major factors limiting the growth of our business. He pulled together data from a wide range of sources, as well as his own extensive business knowledge, to give us an insight into when conditions would improve and how we could be ready to capitalize on better times. He did so in a straight forward, easy to understand manner. A year later it was clear that things had evolved just as he had forecast. Ever since then he’s been my go-to guy on how the e…
Len Ludwig, former CEO, Vencore Capital LLC
Bill Conerly is one of the most interesting and engaging speakers I have ever heard. The fact that he is a very funny man is a bonus.
James A. Kronenberg, Oregon Medical Association
On multiple occasions we have engaged Dr. Conerly to facilitate, and more importantly, stimulate strategic planning sessions. He artfully brings the complexity of economic consequences to light, and is also is a veteran voice of objectivity. And his ability to inject humor keeps the energy and teamwork a priority!
Greg Newton, CFO, Cascade Bancorp
Dr. Conerly’s presentation and view of the economic conditions impacting the world of business is insightful and thought-provoking. His analysis and presentation style is audience focused and engaging, leading to the efficient development of follow-up activities by those in attendance.
Paul Ulrich, The Inteplast Group (plastic bags)
Your talk and its message stuck with people.
David Crowell, after presentation to National Rural Electrical Cooperative Association
Our audience of local business and community leaders not only valued the economic data you provided, but they really appreciated that you made it applicable to their businesses, their personal lives and moreover – that you presented it in a clear and entertaining manner.
Scott Boyer, Mountain Pacific Bank
